International effort calls on homebrewers to support Ukrainian relief with small-batch recipes, live virtual “mash-in”
Brewers worldwide are calling on homebrew hobbyists to join an international effort to send humanitarian aid to Ukraine. From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. GMT (11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. EDT) Tuesday, March 22 hundreds of pro-brewers and homebrewers will mash in on a special “victory series” brew led by Yuri Zastavny, founder of #Pravda Brewery in Lviv, Ukraine. The special brew will be broadcast live on YouTube.
Inspired by Pravda Brewery, brewers around the world have joined in brewing special beers to support a variety of funds to help those impacted by the war. After the Russian invasion of their country, Pravda pivoted from bottling beer to making Molotov cocktails, a message that spread around the globe and has inspired other brewers to help with their own brews. Pravda has turned that viral fame into an effort that has drawn thousands of donations for humanitarian aid and local civil defense forces.
Now, homebrewers can join their efforts by tuning into the broadcast and brewing their own small-batch versions of Pravda recipes to support Ukrainian relief.
“My first batch of beer was 8 liters (2 gallons), probably my best beer ever. Pravda Brewery is seven-years-old now. Sometimes we do three batches of 20 hectoliter (528 gallons) a day but the spirit is like we still make 8 liters,” Zastavny said. “Small scale brewing is always rebellious. It’s for diversity, democracy and fairness. This is what this war is about for the Ukrainians. We fight for our freedom and identity.”
Recipes available include:
● Putin Huylo is a dry-hopped golden strong ale. Its name translates to “Putin is a dickhead.”
● Red Eyes is a hoppy American red ale with Columbus and Cascade hops.
● Vid Syanu Do Donu (From the San to the Don) is a Ukranian imperial stout (not Russian!) named for a line in the Ukrainian national anthem.
● Syla (Strength) is a Belgian tripel at 7.5% ABV.
● Frau Ribbentrop is a European-style wheat beer with orange peel and coriander.

Homebrewers are encouraged to share photos and videos of their brew day using #brewforukraine and #makebeernotwar. Those who can’t attend the broadcast can still support the Brew For Ukraine effort by donating here.
